Chapter 13
Jonahâs Escape
The racing engine, Jonahâs pounding heart, the throbbing pain in his leg, and the macabre sights and sounds all around him worked together to keep Jonah focussed. He knew his pain and fear would keep him alive. His first squad leader had taught him that, and it was true if you knew how to channel it. Jonah did.
As he drove, dodging all the madness in his path out of the parking lot, Jonahâs brain was almost on autopilot - processing his next action and formulating a workable plan. He was mentally crossing off things that would either be too risky or that would be just plain stupid. Jonah would not do anything stupid. But he needed to get home if he could. He decided he needed to get his gear and then try to make his way to Lukeâs old house. Thatâs what heâd do. They could figure this out together. He just hoped that Luke was okay and that he could get to him. Jonah didnât have anyone else. His step-dad had abandoned any sort of relationship with Jonah years ago when Jonah joined the Army and become a Ranger, rather than joining the family window and siding business. And his mom had died in a terrible car accident when he was on his 2nd deployment. Losing their parents was something that Luke and he shared and it made their bond that much stronger.
Jonah switched off the headlights to minimize the attention he seemed to get from all the things shambling around. Donât be stupid. He was only a couple of miles from his apartment and he knew this area, and could navigate it easy enough without the lights. Jonah was glad his apartment was on the ground floor and that he could pull right up to his front door. He only hoped that he could get there and that he could get inside safely. Not knowing what to expect when he made it there, Jonah knew most of his immediate neighbors, and they were all pretty decent folks, and he took a little comfort in that. What he didnât know was that none of them were quite themselves any longer.
Jonah was still holding his Sig in his right hand as he made one frantic turn after another. He was finding it more and more difficult to steer the truck while holding it, so he placed it between his legs and just under his leg to keep it from moving. He wanted to be able to get to it quickly if he needed it. After dodging one particularly large deadhead and narrowly missing a wrecked car, he rounded a bend in the road only to find crashed vehicles littering the road and shoulder, many with headlights still turned on, and a few were smoking or burning. Jonah didnât see a single vehicle moving, nor did he see any people, or once-people, as he rounded that bend. Jonah, mesmerized by the scene before him, couldnât believe his eyes.
